About
During fellowship, Dr. Powell's interests were mainly in epidemiologic research, particularly in the global health arena. She worked with the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation INPUT (Integrating Pediatric TB Services into Child Health Care Services in Africa) study team conducting a UNITAID-funded project on TB screening and diagnostics in Sub-Saharan Africa. She is currently enrolled in the Master of Public Health Global Health Epidemiology and Disease Control program at George Washington University to enrich her epidemiologic research skills. Her hope is that her research time focused on the intersection of HIV and TB in young children in sub-Saharan Africa contributes to better diagnostics, earlier identification of these infectious diseases, and an earlier start to effective treatments, ultimately leading to improved survival and health outcomes.
Dr. Powell also has extensive previous experience performing medical mission work in low-resource settings in Kenya, Costa Rica, Sri Lanka, and Peru. Her time spent overseas on these missions is the reason she went into pediatrics and, subsequently, the infectious diseases field. She plans to assist with the global health tracks for MUSC's medical students and pediatric residents.
Dr. Powell is board certified in pediatrics with plans to take the pediatric infectious diseases boards next fall. She is a member of numerous professional societies, including the Pediatric Infectious Diseases Society, the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, and the American Society of Transplantation. She received her undergraduate degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, and her medical doctorate degree at the Rocky Vista University College of Osteopathic Medicine in Parker, Colorado. She completed her Pediatric residency training at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in New Orleans, Louisiana. Her special interests include HIV, Tuberculosis, tropical diseases, and travel medicine.
Lauren Powell
Dr. Lauren N. Powell is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Pediatrics within the Division of Pediatric Infectious Diseases at the Medical University of South Carolina. She serves as an inpatient and outpatient consultant to provide care for children with infectious diseases.
