I was sitting here thinking about how much I suffered from a problem that went undiagnosed for 20 years, and pretty much ruined my life. I remembered my experience with the Carlbergs in Skaneateles a few years before my long trial ended.. Desperate to do something, I had called a high school classmate, our valedictorian. A person I hadn't talked to since graduation.. She had become a pediatrician.

(I know she treats kids, but I figured maybe she would take a little time to listen to me and suggest some diagnostic approaches.. After all, she was the smartest person I knew. At the least, maybe she would refer me to someone that was a good diagnostician.)

You'd think a classmate you hadn't talked to in 20 years would take a couple minutes. But it was as if she couldn't hang up fast enough. She quickly recommended her friends, the Carlbergs in Skaneateles and said to tell them she referred me.

I called the Carlbergs for an appointment and got the most nasty receptionist I've ever encountered. I told her my classmate referred me. Before even giving my name, the gal said, "We don't take any deadbeats here! I was fully employed, had insurance, and had never welched on any doctor bill. I tried to tell this woman this, but she interrupted by shouting, "If you think you're going to come in here and walk without paying you're wrong! Since I couldn't get past this woman's argumentative, angry badgering, I hung up. I figured any doctor's office that puts prospective patients through this, must not be decent people to work with. I suffered another 5 years before I got a solution, elsewhere.

So I never went to either of the Carlbergs. But I had to say something about my experience. I hope they ditched that receptionist.
