I've been using Takoma Family Health Center as my primary care provider for the last 13 years. I've never received an attitude or bad service. The only issue I have with them is that it gets jam-packed in the mornings (8-11 am); unfortunately (or fortunately depending on your situation) they accept walk-ins. Apparently, everyone in the neighborhood must see a Dr in the morning. If you avoid the "morning rush" with an appointment in the afternoon, you could be in-and-out within 1 hr (I know I do).
As someone with a graduate degree in public health, working for a school of medicine, I found the services provided by the Takoma Family Health Center as well as those directly provided by Dr. Blake to be very poor. After receiving a referral from my primary care physician, I called this clinic, which offered to see me two days later. I waited for almost two hours to actually speak with Dr. Blake, despite having scheduled my appointment for 9AM, when the office first opened. When I was finally seen by Dr. Blake, he acted extremely insensitive to my request for an IUD. I had previously visited Planned Parenthood regarding this issue, and had obtained a great deal of information there regarding this contraceptive choice. He told me that I would not be able to have children if I contracted an STI (failing to ask whether I had recently been tested and/or if I was in a long-term, monogamous relationship). Once I told him that my primary care physician had already conducted a PAP exam, he asked me "Then why are you here?" To which, I had to re-explain that my PCP had given me a referral, because she does not perform IUD insertions. Following my consultation with Dr. Blake, I spoke with a medical assistant, who told me that she would have to call my insurance company to see whether my plan would cover an IUD. After I left the office, and not wanting to return, I called to ask the office to mail me back my referral (since I have an HMO insurance plan). The medical assistant refused to do this (even though this is MY medical record and it is a blatant HIPPA violation not to provide patients with their records when requested directly), stating that "since you have seen Dr. Blake, it is now our property for your file, and you will have to obtain another referral if you want to be seen by someone else." This same medical assistant left a voice message for me stating that my insurance would not cover the cost of an IUD insertion. Today, I called my insurer, and was told that this cost IS covered by my plan, except for the standard $25 co-pay. In sum, I would strongly urge women to see other providers. I have had much more positive experiences using Planned Parenthood of Maryland and would recommend their clinics any day over the Takoma Family Health Center and Dr. Blake.
