Very disappointed with the fact that I was turned away for being 11 minutes late to my appointment with Dr. Sophie Chang. I have had times where I have waited well over 30 minutes to see her and I'm just a tad bit irritated that I was told to reschedule my appointment. I have been asking to be referred to Dermatology and have been turned away. I have made it a point to request another doctor.

My dad is diabetic and has been a patient of Dr. Sofie Chang. In April of 2015 my dad was feeling sick so my mother and him called to make a same day emergency appointment with Dr. Chang. In speaking with the scheduler they were told they can't come in because they are booked. As a result my parents drove to her clinic to plead for an appointment. They showed up around 4:00 pm. They were told to sit in the waiting room. After 5:00 pm an office manager came out and told them that Dr. Chang left for the day and instructed them to go to urgent care in Redondo Beach (she handed them a slip). My parents rushed to urgent care and upon arriving they were seen by the attending physician. They ran a blood test to check his blood sugar level and discovered that it was over 400 (90-110 is the acceptable rate). He was sent to the hospital emergency room where they ran another test and his sugar count had increased to over 700. He was quickly put on IV's and given repeated doses of insulin. In reviewing his medical record both attending physicians at urgent care and at the hospital discovered that he had been taken off his medication three months prior by Dr. Chang. Dr. Chang took him off his diabetic medication because he had registered a normal blood sugar level during his last check up with her. However, one has to keep in mind that my dad has been taking diabetic medication for over 17 years (he's 80 years old now). He has been dependent on that medication to keep his diabetes under control. I was able to speak with Dr. Chang over the phone and notified her that along with having an over 700 blood sugar count, he was turned away at her clinic that resulted in him going to the emergency room with slurred speech and uncoordinated balance. She apologized and said that its "standard medical practice" to remove someone from their diabetes medicine if they are showing good vitals and apologized for what her staff did in not sending him to the emergence room instead of urgent care. However, to assume that what Dr. Chang considered "standard medical practice" in removing needed medication that has been taken for such a long period of time would have positive results is beyond insane. According to the medical physicians who saw him at the hospital it's a miracle he didn't go into a diabetic coma or had a stroke because of this. While this does not amount to malpractice according to the state medical board it is a severe example of negligence and incompetence mixed with terrible customer service standards that could of resulted in my father dying. A formal complaint has been filed by our family with the Patient Care Rep. and will be escalated to the insurance to have them investigate the issue further.

They have a very good professional reputation. I know that I'm under the care of an expert. They always go above and beyond to help me with anything I need. I know I can always count on them. I was impressed with how answered each and every question I had in-depth. They were so patient, and covered all of the bases until I had no more questions. They explained all the risks and benefits of my treatment options. Everything was explained in detail, all my questions were answered, and I felt a lot better about choosing a treatment plan. I was given a polite greeting when I walked in. It was nice to be acknowledged.
