I recently had a “blind date” appointment with Dr. Jeffrey Halpern, DDS, in Des Plaines, courtesy of the referral process of my HMO medical insurance. I could find very little about Dr. Halpern online (something I am attempting to do my part to remedy), and after being passed around like a hot potato between dentists and oral surgeons during the referral process, I wondered just what kind of a dentist would ultimately agree to do oral surgery on a patient with my health problems. I pictured a hole-in-the-wall office, manned by a doctor who graduated from the “Little Shop of Horrors” School of Dentistry. However, I was extremely pleased with Dr. Halpern and his staff.

To begin, I was easily able to schedule my appointments at times that worked for me; they even accommodated a last minute change with no hassle. Parking was easy, with plenty of available street parking and a garage close by. Dr. Halpern’s staff was welcoming and very pleasant; they were especially helpful and efficient in making sure the necessary referrals were in order. The waiting room had a terrific salt-water fish tank to keep my husband entertained while I was in seeing Dr. Halpern- a definite plus. The office was spotless and bright, and the equipment was modern. Prior to the procedure, Dr. Halpern and his staff really tried to put me at ease, even offering to pipe in my choice of music from his iPod.

Dr. Halpern demonstrated his professionalism and care for my well-being from the beginning. At my initial visit, due to my serious health problems, Dr. Halpern put off my surgery until the next day, requesting that I have blood work done to make sure my clotting time would not present an unexpected problem. He also accommodated my weakened immune system and antibiotic allergies by modifying how I would take the antibiotic prior to surgery. I could not believe how quickly the extraction itself was accomplished. I had been warned by another dentist that due to the way my tooth cracked diagonally below the gum line in an accident that it might break off during the extraction and have to be “dug out.” Dr. Halpern removed it with no problem. Afterwards, he had me clamp down on wet tea bags (tannin) to encourage clotting instead of using gauze. I had very little bleeding, did not need a pain killer or ice, and did not get an infection. In fact, the extraction that I had dreaded for two months turned out to be what I am calling a “non-event.” I am ecstatic!

I told Dr. Halpern that he remains my “favorite person in the whole world” for executing a painless and infection-free extraction, but when I told him that I was going to review him online, he said to be sure to mention how handsome he is. I keep my promises. 
