So here's the unfortunate story. My step-son had a loose tooth. He had asked if we could pull it out. One of my kids then told him how we had fun pulling his loose tooth in a creative way when he was younger. My step-son then got really excited to have his tooth pulled some fun way. So 2 weeks later, when the tooth was finally loose enough (it would point straight forward with his tongue), I decided it could be time. The creative and fun way he and I came up with was to have my step-son hang on to a pull-up bar and tie a string to the loose tooth and to the bar. Then when he was ready, he could drop and pop the tooth (which was on the bottom). When he dropped, the string actually came untied, so I tugged on the end that was still hanging out of his mouth and the tooth pooped right out. The entire time my step-son was laughing and having fun. One of the other kids actually got video of the whole thing on his IPod. Everyone was having fun including my step-son.
A week later my step-son's dad pulled him from school and took him in to see Dr. Ankoviak (without my wife notice). When my wife called to find out what was going on and why her son was taken in on her time, all they told her was that it was to inspect the removal of a loose tooth and all they said was the report said there was no undo damage done that it would heal normally.
I hate to fling mud but at this point I need to give a little back ground on dad. In the past 2 years, he has called child protective services on us a total of 10 times. None of which went any further then a visit from a CPS worker. Every time they found that dad was just trying to get us in trouble. One of the last times the worker even had told us that he will be getting in trouble himself if he continues with flagrant calls to CPS. Also, in these last 2 year, he himself has landed in jail twice for domestic violence with a girlfriend/ex-girlfriend. Both times children were present.
So, back to the story. We later find that he again called CPS and they were going to need to come out and investigate like usual. We didn't think anything of it. We were pretty used to this by now and the event he was claiming was just pulling a loose tooth. We later found out that Dr. Ankoviak had signed a letter saying that he thought it was Child Abuse. We tried to talk to Dr. Ankoviak on the phone, we tried to get an email to touch base that way, we even tried to visit the office and wait until he could talk a minute. The whole time we made it clear that we just wanted him to see the 5 minute video of the actually event so that he could make a call with all of the information, not just the side of the story from a person that wasn't even there. We had to set an apt for 6 weeks later! By that time my step-son has had to be pulled from class to talk to a CPS worker and had to go to a psych eval. This was his first time having to deal with a psych eval but remember he has had to continually be pulled from class to talk to a CPS worker. When my wife went to the apt with Dr. Ankoviak, he had no interest in watching the video. He was very rude and just continued to say that he would do it again. He kept saying that it was Child Abuse to MAKE a 6 year old hang from a bar to pull out a tooth. But he wouldn't watch the video that clearly shows my step-son having fun the entire time. There is not one time in the whole event that showed any type of abuse. One of the kids even asked him after if he was scared and if it hurt. He said NO to both.
It's a very hard thing to connect with step-children. Unfortunately ever since this event when my step-son has asked to do something fun but something that he might get hurt like me helping climb the tree in the front or wrestling with the big brothers (which he loves) we have to tell him no because there is too much of a chance that it would cause trouble.
Dr. Ankoviak made a decision based on a jaded ex-husbands one-sided, second-hand view of the event. Instead of talking to my wife or myself about it. He chose to avoid us at all cost. Then acted very unprofessionally when he finally had to talk to my wife. If you are a client of or are choosing to become a client of Dr. Ankoviak, don't pull your kids loose tooth and please, please, please don't come up with a creative/fun way like tying it to a door knob or anything else that all of our parents probably did with us as kids. Because to Dr. Ankoviak that is Child Abuse.

Dr. Ankoviak and his staff are great in every respect. I have been going to them for almost 20 years and don't have a single complaint. I have known Toni for many years and she does a great job.

I was relieved that my gums didn't bleed very much after my appointment. I've been to other dentists that weren't gentle while they were flossing my teeth so I was nervous I would encounter that here but I didn't at all. They do such a great job of never overbooking appointments, even though they are extremely popular. I know for a fact that they have lots of business, but I've never had to wait a long time in a crowded waiting room like other places I've been too. Not sure what kind of magazines they stock since I've never been in the waiting room long enough to pick one up.
