In retrospect, I should have known that this my visit to Longshore Family Dentistry with Dr. Liss was going to be a problem before I ever walked in the door. I purchased an Amazon Local deal for a teeth cleaning, dental exam, and set of x-rays. From the moment I made the appointment, the staff was not very friendly, acting like they were doing me the favor by agreeing to see me as a patient when in actuality I was, of course, a paying customer. I recently accepted a job with an employer that does not provide dental insurance, and I bought this deal because I was trying to do the right thing and keep my mouth and teeth healthy.

Although I stated very clearly to the staff that I have had dental insurance my entire life and received biannual exams and annual x-rays for over 20 years with nary a cavity or problem of any kind, the staff warned me that it was likely that they would have to charge me an additional fee on top of what I paid for the Amazon deal in case I needed "extensive cleaning." This seemed strange to me as they had never seen my teeth and I reviewed my dental history with them.

When I arrived at Longshore Family Dentistry, the receptionist again told me that I would likely need to pay more--again, without ever seeing my teeth. I told her that I was interested ONLY in what the voucher covered--the exam, regular cleaning, and x-rays--and I wanted to be notified before they did anything that would incur an additional charge. I don't think there was a hygenist on staff, as the dentist was the one who examined me. He poked around in my mouth for about 30 seconds and then announced that my gums were "less than perfect" and I would need the "extensive cleaning." I asked how much that would cost, and he said an additional $90, on top of the $40 I had already paid to Amazon. I said that I was not interested in that, and I would just like the regular cleaning, the exam, and the x-rays. They replied that they were not able to do the regular cleaning at all, that what just happened WAS the exam, and that they would not give me x-rays because "there was nothing wrong with my teeth." If there was nothing wrong, then why did I need the "extensive cleaning"?

I asked for my money back, as I did not receive the service that I paid for. They refused. I asked to have the voucher back. They refused, stating that they had examined me and would be redeeming the voucher for their payment.

Fortunately, I called Amazon Local and they were very helpful in lodging a formal complaint and refunding the money themselves. However, I do not appreciate what I view as Longshore's attempt to price gouge its patients. I do not need a fancy office with nice waiting and exam rooms (which there was not), and I do not even absolutely need the staff to be friendly (which they were not), but I do expect to at least get what I paid for and my expectations were not met. This was an absolutely unacceptable experience, and easily the worst interaction I've had as a customer with anything I've ever purchased.
