can honestly say I've been going to Dr. Sgroi since before I was born. He has been my mom's gyno for over 30 years. He delivered me and has been my gyno for over 10 years. He's an amazing man. He listens to everything you have to say and is always helpful. I've never been uncomfortable around him. He's very old school which is another reason I like him. If anyone has anything bad to say about him, there's something wrong with them and not Dr. Sgroi. I would recommend him to anyone who is looking for a doctor.

My review is a bit long, but detailed. I hope I can spare another woman/girl the trouble I experienced. I have been a patient at the St. Joseph's Family Health OB/GYN Clinic (21 Market St Paterson, NJ) for almost a year. Dr. Sgroi was assigned as my doctor. I was recently pregnant and experienced some cramps with spotting. I first went to the emergency room and was diagnosed with a threatened miscarriage and extremely low hcg levels at 6 weeks. As a result, I was able to be seen at the clinic a month sooner than my first prenatal appointment. My appointment was at 10:15 am and I wasn't seen until 11:40 am. When Dr. Sgroi began examining me, he complained that I was at the clinic too early (I was 6 weeks). I explained that I had an emergency and was possibly having a miscarriage. He was rough and inconsiderate while examining me, causing pain and discomfort. He explained that my hcg levels decreased since my visit to the ER and a miscarriage was pending. He then left the room without giving me a chance to ask questions. I took the opportunity to ask him some questions at the nurse's station. He seemed disinterested and impatient. Never in my life have I met a doctor with such a poor bedside manner. He seemed rushed and uncompassionate. He made me feel like I was simply a number and he had to rush off to see his next patient. He failed to thoroughly explain vital information. I waited over an hour to be seen and he spent less than 10 minutes with me in total. I did not step foot in that clinic again after that appointment. The combination of a poor doctor and rude staff at the front desk are good reasons to seek treatment elsewhere.

If you are looking for someone that has the following characteristics - by all means, seek him out. Otherwise, do yourself a favor and get a referral from someone you love and trust.

Unprofessional/Legalized Drug Dealer - Pre-diagnosed me with 3 conditions before speaking to me or running any tests. Didn't ask me any questions, simply started listing symptoms and when I said I didn't have any of those symptoms, persisted on his diagnoses and that I get treated for said diagnoses. I was there for a routine pap and to get an irritation checked out. He never once asked me the reason for my visit.

Demeaning/Condescending - Uses medical terms and when he sees the blank look on your face, likes to talk down to you and make you feel really small. When I asked for clarification it was as if I was wasting 'his' time with my impudence. He after all is the doctor. I should have been in awe to be in his presence. No questions - simply sit there and nod.

Opinionated/Judgmental - if you have tattoos or have been divorced, don't bother or don't mention. He will berate you.

Cruel/No Bedside Manner - I felt like I was in a butcher shop. When he administered the PaP test the pain caused involuntary tears which he found amusing. (I have never had a painful Pap test - uncomfortable yes, painful ~never~ in 15 yrs.)

Works for Pharmaceutical companies - not you. He knew I had no insurance and gave me prescriptions that were prohibitively priced as well as some extras that I humbly declined but he pushed on me anyhow (I didn't fill any of his prescriptions). I went to the pharmacist and thankfully he explained what was prescribed and I was able to purchase an OTC equivalent for only $7 vs $70.

Overall Office - Dark, dingy and dirty. Receptionist is friendly and beyond helpful. Nurse clearly very unhappy working there.

I should have left the moment I was called by the nurse - but for some reason I was transformed into this deer in headlights that lost my voice and simply went along for the ride. This happened Saturday morning and I am still haunted by the experience.
