Dr. Pappas did an open Nissen fundoplication on me in February of 1999 for the treatment of severe acid reflux. The procedure involved wrapping part of my stomach around my lower esophagus to create a new sphincter valve that would control the release of acid into my esophagus, thus eliminating the reflux issue. Before the procedure, I had several large ulcers in my esophagus due to reflux. They were very painful, in a burning sort of way, and there wasn't anything I could eat or drink, except for watermelon, that did not give me severe heartburn. The surgery was, in my opinion, a great success, and 12 years later I have not had another occurrence of heartburn. I was in the hospital at Duke for three days. My recovery time was approximately a month, in which I stayed home from work and rested. My diet began with liquids for a few days, then soft foods, such as mashed potatoes. I followed his instructions to the letter, and I am very glad I had this procedure done. Now, 12 years later, I have developed other GI problems that my local gastro guy can't seem to get a handle on, so he wants to refer me out. I requested that he send me to Dr. Pappas, and we are in the process of making an appointment at Duke. I know that I will be in very capable hands. Dr. Pappas has a gift, and he makes his patients feel immensely better, both physically and emotionally, through his treatment. Thank you, Dr. Pappas.
