I've always had long periods (8 days), compared to most of my friends (3-6 days). But since turning 40 a couple years ago my periods became heavier and heavier, and visited more frequently. Some people just told me that it was "normal" for women's cycles to go through these changes. I felt like all I ever did was bleed and think about my cycle. I also became anemic and slowly began to run out of energy - and with 4 children and a full time job, life was getting more and more depressing and felt like I was getting behind on the fun things in life, and housework, and quality time with friends and family. I wasn't exercising and therefore have gained more weight because it seemed all I was doing after work, was eating and sleeping. A year ago I had some cramping at an unusual time during my cycle, and an ultrasound showed that I had a polyup inside my uterous. That's when I first me Dr. Harmon. I had hysteroscopy to have the polyup removed, and at the same time she placed an IUD inside to reduce the length and amount of bleeding with my periods. I was really excited! Unfortunately my body wasn't so excited, within a month the IUD actually came out, right along with yet another heavy period. We had also discussed other options like an Ablation and a Hysterectomy; but I was nervous, and reluctant to make any decisions. So I went on for about the next year just accepting things the way they were. Until my cycles began to change yet again, some months my period would last 12 days or 14 days. Then I spotted for 30 days! That brought be back into to talk to Dr. Harmon and this time she helped me make a decision to go ahead with the Endometrial Ablation. She actually had an opening in her schedule and got me in 3 days later. The procedure was very similar to the Hysteroscopy that I'd had a year earlier, so I was pretty relaxed this time around, but as usual I was treated with complete respect and care, and made to feel very comfortable. After the procedure I rested, took my pain medication, and the next day I was feeling great! A little bit of cramping, but not even as bad as period cramps. It's been two weeks now, I'm taking iron to get healthy again and get my energy back up, and I feel totally fine. I'm so excited to see how well this will work. To think that I will most likely only have light periods from now on, and even possibly NO periods, is amazing! It only took 1 day. I will definitely tell my friends to consider having an Endometrial Ablation done for heavy periods. Thanks Salem Women's Clinic!
