Dr. Velez is the most caring and understanding doctor that I have ever met.

Do yourself a favor and DO NOT go to this doctor if you need OB or GYN care. I never actually met Dr. Velez, which is part of the problem. Her practice (she is solo) is so busy that she does not have time to see patients, her "waiting room" (if you can call it that, it is just a bunch of chairs in a hallway outside her office) is so over-crowded that there were several pregnant women sitting on the floor, the wait time is consistently over an hour (according to two patients I asked while I was waiting and wondering how much longer it would be), and they do not even call you when there has been a cancelation -- you find out your appointment has been canceled after you have arranged for time off of work and arrived at the office. Additionally, they only take cash, so if you do not have insurance, expect to pay $250 in cash for a routine visit, and they only give you a receipt if you ask for one and are very patient because the office is so disorganized. Once you are finally seen by the intake people, you will be taken to an office filled with dirty old chairs with missing backs and stuffing coming out of them. There is no privacy during your intake, staff is running around like headless chickens, and even the exam room has a window situated right where the stirrups are that is only partially covered and looks out into the street. I was examined by the midwife, who was nice enough, but she didn't ask if I had any questions, and no one gave me any information about what to expect now that I was pregnant for the first time (what to eat, what not to eat, what to expect, nothing). I have never been so horrified by a medical practice in my life. I may be accustomed to the finer Park Avenue offices of my New York childhood, but I have lived in Philadelphia most of my adult life and have found many great doctors here. I have even visited public clinics that have been nicer. In fact, the Mary Howard Health Clinic on 9th Street, which serves homeless people, is by far nicer, cleaner, friendlier, and more organized than Dr. Velez's shameful excuse for a medical practice. I went to Dr. Velez because I was impressed by how long she has been practicing in Philadelphia (a city notorious for losing OBGYNs because of the high costs of medical malpractice insurance), but I will never go back. I now go to PennCare for Women (formerly Women First) where they have a wonderful group of doctors and staff and offer their patients proper attention, care, information, and respect.
