Dr. David Dickson was my husband’s primary care physician for approximately 10 years and he was a loyal patient. The unprofessional, rude and ineffective service he provided during my husband’s recent illness fall of 2012 delayed the diagnosing of his throat cancer stage 4A by over 4 months.
His style of referring to one specialist at a time is outdated and inefficient. I requested an ENT consult in October and his office staff just never got back to me. We visited Dr. Dickson in fall of 2012 for symptoms and by Jan 2013 we still had not even seen a neurologist due to his slow referral process. He also never looked in my husband’s mouth where the tumor on his soft palate was clearly visible. Wouldn’t this be part of a normal physical?
My husband’s symptoms of vertigo, lethargy, vomiting and headache were so strong he was unable to function as of Sept 2012. After two office visits , emergency visits and specialists, we were still waiting to see the neurologist in Jan 2013. On Christmas my husband was extremely symptomatic and I was fearful another ED visit would just send us home with more outpatient follow ups as the previous visits had. We wanted Dr. Dickson’s advice on symptom relief and paged him the day after Christmas. Our theory was perhaps he could help us with some strategies or medication that would enable us to survive until my husband's neurology appointment two weeks in the future. His office was closed for the Christmas week. The first phone call he took three hours to answer. He was short with us and told us “if you are that sick go to the emergency room”. It seemed a poor use of resources to go to a total stranger and try once again to explain four months of symptoms. He had no compassion or empathy. We decided to try to make it through without an ED visit. The next day, Roy’s symptoms were even worse. Once again he took hours to return our call. I thought he may have misunderstood our previous call. My husband asked if he would speak to me, his wife, as I had some input. Dr. Dickson said I can’t talk to your wife due to HIPPA. My husband had just given Dr. Dickson verbal permission to speak to me and I was going to give HIM information. The statement that he couldn’t talk to me was in error. My husband apologized to Dr. Dickson and said “I’m sorry, it seems as if we are bothering you” and Dr. Dickson replied in a loud yell, “You ARE bugging me!” This phone call ended and we have had no further contact with him. He never once attempted to assist us further or follow up with us.
I have never experienced such immature rude behavior from a physician. I have actually been guided to report his behavior to the medical board and have done so. I have spoken to one other patient who had a similar experience with him.
After our stressful upsetting conversation with him we went to the walk in clinic. The provider was Christine Urquhart at the NW walk in clinic (360) 752-0518. She listened to our whole story and prescribed my husband medication which decreased his symptoms. She provided the great service, empathy and care that his primary care physician was not capable of. I asked her for an ENT referral and she wrote me one on the spot.
If Dr. Dickson had more actively worked on our case we could have caught the stage 4 cancer much sooner. He abandoned our care over the Christmas holiday and was unprofessional.
After our horrible interaction with Dr. Dickson, we chose a new PCP, He listened actively to my husband's symptom list and diagnosed him with cluster headaches on our first visit. We were prescribed medication and my husband's symptoms stopped. Dr. Dickson missed multiple diagnoses and he caused much suffering.
We want to make sure no other vulnerable, sick patients are harmed by him. I will tell anyone and everyone not to choose him as a PCP.

They are nice enough, but waste my time every year I have to go and charge over a $100 to talk about 2 minutes about the real reason I was there and spend about 90% of the time talking about stuff not even medically related. The bills never have a due date on them, but somehow I still end up getting past due notifications. The cookies are good though.

His staff is wonderful and the office is neat as a pin, but avoid this man like the very plague if you 1. aren't a Conservative 2. aren't a Christian 3. aren't Caucasian 4. have anything in your medical history that might conflict with the agendas of the previous three points.
Like, say, having had an abortion.
You will be shown the door.
I was.
So much for 'Judge not lest ye be judged'. Not to mention the ol' Hippocratic Oath.
