My mother had total knee replacement and before she even had the surgery, I actually come and visit the facility myself. This was because we were told to consider skilled nursing care facility for her since all of our siblings won't have the ability to care for her 24-7. We were also told that right after surgery, we can take her home and provide the care ourselves. I actually went there and talk to the care coordinator Jennie. She was really nice and took the extra time to give me a tour. I was pleasantly surprised of how clean the Transition care unit was (that would be the unit my mother will stay if she were to be admitted). I was promised the care would be excellent.

Right after my mother's surgery, I specifically requested the doctor to send my mother to Santa Anita Convalescent since I got such a good impression about the facility. The whole reason being that she would get daily physical therapy for a couple of weeks and then we can take her home.

THAT WAS A MISTAKE!

On the day of her discharge from the hospital, we immediately took her there. When we got there, they sent out a tiny little nurse aide with an almost broken down wheelchair. We needed to have her call someone else to help since she won't be able to help my mother out of the car and onto the wheelchair. Someone did come. This time a male nurse aide came and my sister and they finally wheeled her into the transition care unit. I was then looking to park the car and when I finally got into the room, my sister told me no one had come by the past 10 min. They basically waited and no one had come by to greet them or instruct them what to do. Frustrated, I went to the nurse station and looked for the nurse and he was eating a hamburger at the nursing station. When he got to the room, he basically had no information to offer us other than "this will be her room, the restroom is here" . "If you need anything, you can call us at the nurse station". I was surprised at how unhelpful and unwelcoming his attitude was. What about having him greeting my mother, explain things such as the medications she will be given, how would she call for help, etc...basically admitting her to the unit. I needed to ask if there was a walker for my mom to get around since she will be needing one. I was then told "NO" and he said there was nothing he can do since the physical therapist has gone for the day and the "gym" was locked up. He never even offer to reassure us that there would be plenty of help for my mom should she needs anything. He proceeded to tell me that he's new and that he never worked in transitional unit before. THAT WAS NOT RE-ASSURING at all, would you say?? I then asked how many patients does he have tonight and he doesn't seem to have a clue. Getting more frustrated, I requested to talk to the supervisor name Wendy and she basically offered no further information or assistance.

The whole hour of that short encounter was so pathetic and unprofessional on both the nurse and the supervisor's part that I finally had no choice but to take her home. I did not want to subject my mother to any fall or other mishap, especially after her surgery.

I realize that this might be just an isolated case that we get this experience and I realize that I can't expect the more adequate care we have gotten from an acute hospital. However, I do expect the staff to be professional and helpful, taking the time to explain and reassure both the patients and the family members. We received none. D

I totally agree with previous review below in that not much information is given to patient and family and the staff's friendliness is definitely lacking.
