My mother registered me to see Dr. Dillworth when I was 16 after she learned that I am gay. I attended bi-weekly phone conversion treatment for several months. This traumatized me more than the events that lead to therapy. I wish someone would have protected me from Dr. Dillworth at a young age, so that I could have developed without the toxic shame and existential dread that this practitioner employed as his treatment approach. He told me that as long as I was attracted to people of the same sex, I could never have a close relationship with God. He said that my same-sex attraction (which he calls SSA), may never go away and that I could learn to live in denial of it. I eventually pretended to turn straight so that the appointments would end. He gave a progress report to my mother about the change in my sexuality, which never actually occurred. Marc Dillworth places a personal, non-evidence-based layer of religion atop psychology, which is coercive and manipulating to vulnerable youth.

Though Exodus is no longer, Marc Dillworth has fervently persisted with his cause for faith-based freedom from homosexuality. There are a few things that need to be considered before seeing Marc Dillworth or any of his affiliates, either with the preview Exodus International or his branched-off "Hope for Wholeness Counselling." Organizations such as his lead compelling stories of individuals who believe that through prayer and petitioning they have been rescued from their homosexuality. Though these individuals should not be devalued, the vast majority of people who have sought counsel from Exodus or any other faith-based organization have reported suicide, thoughts of suicide and a sense of a guilt that didn't exist before counselling. Ask yourself: if there was a medication in the world that the majority of people were reporting death-like symptoms to, despite the few who had success, would you take it. That medication is the therapy that Dillworth offers.

My time with Dillworth was just over 4 years from my teens into my adulthood. I ended shortly after Exodus closed. Many of the conversations were spent coercing me to try to become this version of myself that over and over again became unachievable. Christianity tries to market conversion therapy similar to the used-car sales industry. At first the deal seems really attractive, in the end though I felt worse because of my inability to achieve what was advertised. I hope Dillworth and his affiliates will be disbanded of their licenses, but in the meantime I beg you: if you are a parent of or someone who has identified same-sex attraction Dilloworth's counselling is a dangerous, money-grabbing and ineffective way to go. Don't feel you have to "come out" but trying to rid your sexuality will only lead to heartache.

Marc Dillworth promotes and practices "conversion therapy". "Conversion therapy – sometimes known as reparative or “sexual reorientation” therapy – is a dangerous practice based on the premise that people can change their sexual orientation, literally “converting” from gay to straight. Conversion therapy has been discredited or highly criticized by virtually all major American medical, psychiatric, psychological and professional counseling organizations." (SPLC)

This is an unethical, damaging, and ersatz form of therapy. For more information, cut and paste this link: http://www.splcenter.org/conversion-therapy
