I am a bit shell-shocked as I write this, because I can't even believe what I experienced with Dr. Rothenberg. She was referred to us by our pediatrician at PAMF. I had two consultations with her regarding my preschool-aged son. The initial consult was great - she seemed knowledgeable, organized, and eager to help us. The second consult - a half-hour phone session with me and my husband - was a nightmare. She kept interrupting, talking over us, and telling me to "slow down" (I was not talking fast). Her abrasiveness was a huge turnoff. Nevertheless, we made an appointment for a 1.5-hour in-person session the following Monday at a cost of $200.

And then she dropped the bombshell: she said she has an unreliable car, and that for all school and home visits, we would be required to drive to her home in Redwood City, PICK HER UP AND TAKE HER there. Seriously? We live an hour from Redwood City, in the opposite direction from our son's school and home. When my husband and I suggested alternative arrangements - use Uber/Lyft, a rental car, etc. - she became VERY argumentative and combative, to the point of raising her voice. She insisted that we pick her up and drive her ourselves, and that it was a dealbreaker for our arrangement. We were so turned off by her lack of professionalism, personal responsibility, and (let's face it) maturity--what kind of doctor asks patients to chauffeur them to appointments?--that we canceled our in-person appointment. I also wrote to our pediatrician about our experience in the hopes that they will never recommend Dr. Rothenberg to other patients!

We were having issues with our then 6-year old, who started having nightmares, was showing higher-than-normal anxiety and was very defiant. Dr. Rothenberg met with us 3 times and took detailed notes but never once spoke to our child. She did observe him at our home. The feedback we received was that we were too permissive. We eventually found a very qualified therapist at Stanford-LPCH. At the first meeting, my son told her that the nanny we had (who lasted 2 months) was hitting him, but it happened while weren't home and he didn't tell us. I was devastated, but was glad to finally be getting help for my son. He did really well and he knows I'm here for him no matter what!
