Having now had time to process what happened, I wanted to write you a letter. This letter is to inform you of our experience at Broadway Animal Clinic in Haltom City, Texas.

On Saturday, 1-17-15 at 11:32am, our family brought our dying cat Bubba to your vet hospital. The cat lived with my mother in law- he was her loyal friend for over 16 years, but we ALL loved him very much and considered him family. We had little information about your establishment except that you’d been there for a long time and were located close by to where she lived. We highly preferred the idea of using an animal hospice service, but we couldn’t reach anyone that day, and since he was clearly suffering, the matter was urgent. My mother in law already had her reservations about your business practices from a bad experience she’d had many years past- someone there gave out the wrong phone number to someone who had found her missing dog, and because of that, her dog was put to sleep. Still, we reassured her that it would be ok and since you were close by, she agreed. It was more important to get Bubba somewhere quickly. He was old and had health issues, but had always let us know he was very much alive, and so it was until that day we kept an optimistic, yet cautious eye on him. But today he woke up with extremely labored breathing and couldn’t be comforted in the normal ways he was, so we knew something was terribly wrong. When we arrived there, already emotional, what we needed was 2 things (well really 3, but I think the third thing is implied). We needed:
1. A vet who could quickly evaluate Bubba and confirm that euthanasia was the right course
2. A vet who could perform the euthanasia in a humane manner
3. A vet who could do both of the above with compassion towards our beloved pet and family member.

We were told by Dr. Gill we’d be “spinning our wheels” by doing any tests, so we prepared ourselves to euthanize. As I paid for the procedure, not once did the girl who was taking my money ever say sorry or really even look up at me. I had to ask her for a tissue as I sobbed, to which she casually replied, “There’s paper towel in the room.” Looking back, I really don’t care about her lack of empathy toward me; taking care of our cat was all that mattered. So we waited in the partitioned off “room” for the vet while trying to keep Bubba calm, when we hear the vet casually call out , “where’s the people with the cat?”. Then Dr. Gill comes in and starts stabbing at him with a needle, causing him to scream and struggle. Apparently he couldn’t get the needle in the right place and left the room to get more medicine but didn’t tell us why, leaving us hysterical and not knowing if our poor Bubba was about to take his last breath or what was going on, all the while him crying out and struggling. Then he came back in the room and did it again. More terror, more chaos. At this point the entire lobby is gawking, clearly privacy or dignity are of no importance there. Then Dr. Gill declared, “I guess I’ll just stab it in the heart,” which is what he then did. Our poor cat then died immediately, but his death at the hands of Dr. Gill was an ugly, barbaric process. And after that, without a word, Dr. Gill started shoving our poor cat in trash bag, which was just another terribly uncompassionate act. I told him to stop, my mother in law grabbed Bubba up in the towel we had carried him in with, and walked out the front door.
We assumed too many things that day. We assumed a vet in business that long could properly euthanize an animal without causing them so much additional suffering. We assumed that vets and their staff have compassion towards animals and their owners, with the clear understanding that they are not just pieces of trash in the end, that they are members of people’s families.
If I could go back I would not have recommended to my mother in law that we put him down at your hands. We would all have rather let our poor Bubba pass away on his own, because even though it might have also been ugly, he would have been spared the terror you put him through that day. I want you to know that there were four of us in the room that witnessed with our eyes and ears the inhumane actions of Dr. Gill, and we have all been deeply traumatized by the event. We will be filing a formal complaint with the Texas State Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners in hopes of sparing this from happening to another family and their beloved pet.
If you don’t care about any of that and feel like trashing this letter, you have NO business being a veterinarian or working at a veterinarian’s office. If you do care, treat people better. Treat animals more humanely. Explain the euthanasia process so families know what’s coming. Realize your actions can and have traumatized others. Say you’re sorry. Know better next time.
