I recently had a very routine eye surgery with Dr. William Freeman at Shiley Eye Institute in La Jolla, CA. During surgery a staph infection invaded the interior of my eyeball causing massive damage that required additional surgery and ultimately resulted in blindness. Freeman admitted that I was infected during surgery but said that “it happens” and that I was just “the unlucky one.” Before surgery my vision was 20/20 with corrective lenses in that eye. Post surgery 3/4 of my optic nerve is damaged beyond repair. There is no hope of regaining my sight. Freeman called me on the phone to deliver this news rather than telling me in person. He said there was nothing more he could do for me. I was left hanging regarding current medications and ongoing treatment. I had to find a new doctor to help me. A second and third opinion confirmed the prognosis that I will never regain sight in that eye. I have been maimed for life. It has greatly affected my daily activities and it is interfering with my ability to do my professional job. The quality of care I received from Freeman was abysmal. His patient skills are deplorable, arrogant, abrupt. Freeman continually ran very late, rushed appointments, avoided discussion and questions. I saw his retina fellow much more than I saw him. More than once I had to insist that he attend my appointments. I have complained to Shiley Eye Institute about the treatment I received from Freeman and the staph infection I contracted in their surgery. I am awaiting the outcome of that complaint.
