It's Results Week here at Your Best Life, and we're looping back with our very first guest on the podcast - someone I met 12 pounds ago - she's my new nutrition coach. New York Times best selling author and celebrity fitness and nutrition expert, JJ Virgin.
Main Questions Asked:
- What is the impetus behind this new book?
- How do you switch to healthier foods for kids?
- What is a lateral shift?
- We've heard a lot about coconut – isn't that high in fat? How is that healthy?
- Why should I gradually taper off sugar with these recipes? Wouldn't it be easier to just completely ditch all sugar at once?
- Some of your recipes include quinoa, which some experts argue is high in carbs. So how can it be low-sugar impact in your cookbook?
- Why are protein shakes so beneficial for breakfast, or as a second meal replacement?
- How can you satisfy a sweet tooth if you eliminate sugar?
Key Lessons Learned:
- Fast, healthy, delicious meals can cost less and be better for you.
- Kids will eat something healthier for them if healthier foods or healthier ingredients are presented to them.
- Ingredient substitutions can help make foods and meals healthier without feeling deprived of similar tastes such as pasta dishes or sweets.
- Fat is one of the best things you can eat. The new diet trend is to eat a high fat diet. Fat is amazing and coconut is a special high fat food that is thermic, raises your metabolism and is easy to burn off.
- Butter is beneficial healthy fat.
- Sugar is like any addiction; if you cut out sugar cold turkey, like an addition, you will go into withdrawal. Initial simple swaps such as from wheat pasta to quinoa pasta, white potato to sweet potato, or from raisins to grapes. Taper and transition is the best way to set yourself up for success.
- Protein shakes are fast, easy, delicious and filling.
- Whole, real, low-sugar impact foods underlie these recipes. Vegan and vegetarians as well as meat lovers will find great-tasting recipes.
- The cookbook uses naturally sweet ingredients like coconut flakes or monk fruit. Also, although not typically a dessert ingredient, an avocado can create creaminess and amazing texture.
