​Do Computer Glasses Reduce Eye Strain?

Approaching 43 years of age and still putting in 12+ hours a day on the computer, I wanted to know if computer glasses would help reduce my eye strain and eye fatigue making the long days a little easier.

My chief complaint was predominantly eye strain from the monitor glare. When I turn the monitor’s brightness down to where the glare isn’t bothersome, I can work longer, but the vividness of the colors, contrast and clarity of the type goes down at the same time.

The most popular and top rated computer glasses are marketed to both gamers and general computer users; however, the only difference in the gamer versions seems to be thinner wrap around styles that work well with headphones. Who doesn’t love a great fit with headphones? 

I went with a set of Gunnar Optiks for about $70 that looked like my style in the photo. I was pleased to see they qualified for Amazon prime and the shipping was free. Two days later I received my pair and was immediately impressed by the quality and fit.

The first thing I noticed wearing the new glasses at my computer was how bright, clear and smooth everything seemed. It was almost too bright for my eyes. I was now curious how low I could turn down my brightness settings and still get the clarity and definition I wanted. Turning the brightness down by about 50% and testing with the Gunnar’s on and off, the difference was extreme. I’ll describe it as similar to the difference between watching regular and high definition television.

Being able to turn the brightness down without sacrificing the definition of the picture really hit home as a major benefit to me. How’d my eyes feel after 12 hours of continuous computer use with the lower brightness settings? Better than ever. I’ve been using them for about a month now and I’ll never go back. My only complaint is that after removing the Gunnars, everything else seemed a bit dull and cold in comparison.

How exactly do computer glasses work?

Computer glasses have a very slight magnification with an anti-reflective coating and a UV layer of blue blocking protection which further increases contrast while cutting high energy light and reducing glare. Most are finished in a light yellow tint that seems to have additional brightness-enhancing effects.

Will computer glasses help if you already have 20/20 vision?
