The science of reflexology deals with the principle that there are reflex areas in the feet and hands. These reflex areas correspond to the glands, organs, and other parts of the body. A reflexologist uses his or her hands to work on these reflex areas. Reflexology can help to relieve stress and tension. Many of today's diseases are considered to be caused by stress and tension. The effects of stress are much like putting a "tourniquet around the body's systems". This can have serious consequences to a person's health. Reflexology can help the unblocking of nerve impulses and can help increase blood flow to an area. All organs and glands receive instructions to operate from the nervous system or nerves of the body. Problems related to nervous system can occur when tension creates and puts pressure on nerves. Tension can a similar effect on blood vessels causing a reduction of the blood flow to an area. Once the tension and pressure on nerves and blood vessels is relieved, there is an improvement in the flow of blood or nerve impulses to that part of the body. Reflexology helps your body return to balance. Stress puts the body out of balance. Stress can cause over-activity or under-activity of organs or glands which can create many problems. Reflexology may be useful in helping the body return to its normal functioning level. Reference: Better Health With Foot Reflexology "The Ingham Method" Dwight C. Byers, Ingham Publishing, 2008.
