Over about a 1 week time period, I noticed my mom's mental alertness, cognitive behavior, etc. diminishing quickly. I thought it was the pain killers she was on for some nasty injuries she got in a fall. Two days later, she was laying in her bed with her mouth open and trying to talk, but was unable to. I called for the nurses, the CNA, etc, and asked why she was like this. They all "passed the buck" and some said she was fine! Huh??

My mom was taken to the ER at UCI Medical Center. They found that she was very sick! Her hemoglobin was extremely LOW at 5.3 and should have been at least an 8. Her electro lights were also very low. The ER doctors were discussing her "wishes" with me and prepared me for losing her.

She was moved to the ICU and given blood, more electro lights, and the IV she was given in the ER. The next day, 3 doctors called me into a type of family lounge to have a meeting about my mom. The main doctor assigned to her said "Your mother was allowed to become SEVERLY DEHYDRATED". Then they went over possible procedures she might need.

What really got me was that the ER doctors said that Carehouse said my mom "was always in this condition." What?? I was shocked and assured the ER team that claim was false.

If my mom recovers, she is not going back to Carehouse

Thank you Carehouse Healthcare Center! My brother, Bob C., has spent the past three months at Carehouse. In April 2014, he had an infection with his knee replacement. The knee replacement prosthesis was removed, and a spacer was put in. Once this was done, he was offered an opportunity to be treated at Carehouse. There, he has been provided with wound care, pain management, IV therapy, to name a few. He gives high marks to all of the staff who have assisted him. Carehouse, in conjunction with his surgeon and doctors, have worked closely as a team to both save his life and his knee. The staff at Carehouse is comprehensive and includes a variety of specialties. All staff including the nursing, physical therapy, and other staff have been attentive and caring. Social services at Carehouse have been in close contact as well. Kudos to Carehouse! Our family is especially happy that our brother has been given a new chance thanks to Carehouse.

I called at 6 p.m. and no one answered the telephone. How does one reach a patient?

Never allow someone you care about to be treated at Care House. The guys on the so-called PT staff were just plain lazy. Apparently no one supervises anyone there. The place is sloppily run. Not really dirty, but not clean either. Very bad experience there

My mom (83years) recently stayed at care house to recover from surgery. I'd taken a tour prior to mom arriving and made sure she would be in the rehab section vs the convalescent wing. I arrived 45 min after she arrived by ambulance that evening. No one had even been in to see her yet. A man across the hall and a woman next door were screaming "help" over and over again. There were people walking all over. When I finally got a supervisor and expressed my dissatisfaction, she apologized and offered to put mom in another room. We did so and she was across from the nurses station in a bigger, lighter room. The next morning I found out that mom buzzed for a nurse for 40 minutes in the middle of the night to get help to go to the bathroom. No one ever came so she shuffled her way to the bathroom (2 days after knee surgery and no walker was issued to her). Then later that night she was in pain and wanted ice. No one came after buzzing and buzzing. The ice bag leaked all over her bed and again no one came when called. My mom was on her own. I complained the next day and they apologized. It ends up that's what they are good at. The next couple of nights mom slept great. I honestly believe they gave her sleeping pills since my mom is in general not a good sleeper. I also noticed in the mornings she slurred her words but then after a few hours would be back to speaking normal. Around the 3rd day I complained again to the supervisor that no one would answer my mom's buzzes. She advised me to just have my mom yell to the nurses when she saw one walk by her room. Mom was also supposed to be rehabbing. A therapist would work with her for an hour or so a day but then she just laid there the rest of the day. No walks, stretching or other movement. We were basically renting a bed and getting meals made for my mom. After a week I decided mom would be safer in her own house by herself than in this place and I took her out. While I waited the two hours for them to discharge her, I stood at the nurses station. The entire time I listened to the buzzers of other patients buzz away and the staff completely ignored them. Though there were some nice nurses and staff members there, I would never take a loved one to this place again.

Their office was a little too loud. It wasn't unbearably loud but it was starting to hurt my ears. Every time I've called and left a message, I've never heard back. It's extremely annoying. They didn't give me advice that would benefit me at all. They only cared about what would make them the most money. They don't have that great of a professional reputation in my community. They definitely aren't known for being experts. They try to keep the restrooms stocked, but sometimes they run out of stuff. I have had to ask them a few times to re-stock.
