Dr. Beck did my dog's spay and took beautiful care of her, there is no scar whatsoever and Kit healed quickly. Dr. Sheera saw us for follow-up. The desk staff was kind and courteous and reassuring, I was stressed out about the idea of my dog having surgery (like I would about any family member) and they were all very kind. I feel badly for the person who gave the office one star for not providing after-hours care but I have never had a vet who did 24-7 on-calls, all of the vets in Lawrence send people to Blue Pearl in KC after hours. Personally, if I thought one of my pets was in mortal danger I'd be more inclined to drive as fast as I safely could to Manhattan to the K-State Vet Clinic because it is only another 30-40 minutes from the Topeka clinic and would have the best doctors and equipment and on-site lab abilities. Hopefully I will never need to do that, but people should understand that regular vet offices can't just unlock the doors on a moment's notice, all of their computers and equipment has been taken offline after closing and just getting the office up and running would take at least half an hour if not more, on top of the 30 minutes for the doctor to get dressed and make their own drive in to the office. And unless they have techs who will come at night also, they will be trying to run labs, think through the diagnostics, talk to you, and treat the dog all at the same time. They are not saying no to be mean or because they don't care, they are telling you to go to a 24-hour clinic because that is your animal's best shot at getting good and prompt care. I wish there was a 24 hour vet practice in Lawrence, I have also had some nervewracking, very upsetting late-night stress with having a sick pet who was projectile pooping all over the place, and the idea of an hour-long drive in the car was nearly unthinkable. I do not understand why Lawrence, a town with lots of animal lovers, cannot manage an animal ER. All of the vets here charge two to three times as much as Oskaloosa does and they don't seem half as good as Dr. Sheera, so I am happy to make the drive out there.

Not long ago my 12 year old beagle mix was whining in pain. I noticed his stomach was swollen. This came on rather quickly because just a few hours before he was fine. It was 9:10 p.m. I first contacted the office and got the recording. I then called the Vets at their home. (let it be known I am a long time client of these Vets. I gave Dr. Meyer all my dogs symptoms and asked when could I meet Dr. Shera (she sees the small animals) over at the clinic. He said that I probably didn’t need to bring the dog in, he actually said it was probably nothing and to give him one aspirin and then bring him in to the office in the morning. Well, I was in shock. My dog is in pain here. I said again that his stomach looked weird and that I really would feel better if they could look at him. This time Dr. Meyer told me that they weren’t going to be able to come to the office and that I should probably take him to Topeka for care. Topeka is one hour away. I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. I was worried to death about my dog and my trusted vet/office is sending me off one hour away with our dog. So we did. We went to Stonehouse Animal Clinic in Topeka. A 24 hour clinic. It was now 10:40 p.m. After x-rays and blood work they determined our dog had a mass in his abdomen. Dr. Carter did surgery that evening and found our dog had cancer that was inoperable. He had a consultation with us, showed us the x-rays and even gave us some options for our dog. Dr. Carter was caring, sympathetic and patient. It was bad news for our dog but, the dog was no longer in pain and we got to say good-bye to him while he was awake. That hour drive to Topeka that night was nerve wracking and caused us and our dog so much stress. You trust your family Vet, we pay our family Vet…..on time, never an outstanding bill, and when you need your family Vet…….they send you to Topeka. It wasn’t like it was 2:00 a.m. or anything either. Still, I want a Family Vet who I can count on. Who may not love my pets as I do, but cares enough to be there when I need them the most. Unfortunately this wasn’t the only time this office sent us away at a critical hour. Another time it was with our beloved cat. A long time patient of theirs. At 1:40 a.m. on a snowy Feb. morning, we again were sent to Topeka by Dr. Carl and Dr. Shera. Snow drifts 4’ high on country roads, we got stuck. Thank goodness one of our neighbors (in that early hour) pulled us out so we could continue on with our sick cat to Topeka. Oskaloosa Animal Clinic is close….it’s reasonable, and I will probably have to continue to take my pets there once in a while. but I’m sorry, as a good paying client with beloved animals….I wish I had a family Vet that cares just a little bit more.
