Breakfast has always been my favorite meal of the day: pancakes, oatmeal, fruit and yogurt, eggs! And what luck—it's the most important meal of the day too. Right?
The problem is, many of us are loading our bodies with dense, gluten-heavy, sugar-packed meals as soon as we wake up, when digestion is slowest. You know how sometimes you eat a big bowl of fruit and cereal and then immediately want to climb back in bed? I used to feel that way every day. Worse, I thought it was normal.
Ask yourself how you feel in the morning after breakfast. If it seems a change is in order and you want to feel light and energetic—but still satiated—consider these great A.M. alternatives I've been chowing down on (or sipping) myself.
#1. To start: room temperature water with lemon
Flush out your system before you get to eating. Toxins build up in the body overnight, but lukewarm water with lemon helps to clean it out. A solid source of nutrients like calcium, potassium, vitamin C, and pectin fiber, it has medicinal and antibacterial properties, contains some iron and vitamin A, helps maintain your body's pH levels, and aids in digestion. The list goes on and on!
