It’s been a difficult year so far, with COVID-19 complicating our lives in scary and unforeseen ways. Uncertainty remains in the air. Even if we can hope that the virus falls off our radar in the coming months, a fall resurgence is likely — but there’s no need to panic. This gives us a few months to prepare ourselves and our families so that the next round is easier to tackle.
Even with states reopening left and right, we still need to be safe about interacting with other people. Practicing social distancing and wearing masks is good practice and a socially responsible choice we can all make. A resurgence could come sooner than anticipated if we aren’t careful.
And it is anticipated. The director of the US National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, Dr. Anthony Fauci, said in a recent interview that he believes COVID-19 will rear its ugly head again when the cooler weather rolls around and other seasonal viruses hit. And if a resurgence comes alongside the seasonal flu, we could be in for another ugly season, this time lasting for many more months than before.
Keeping up on healthy habits now could give your body the helping hand it needs to stay safe later. According to the CDC, many of the adults who experience COVID-19 complications also suffer from obesity, hypertension and metabolic disease. This means we can get ahead of the game by doing what we can to avoid or reverse these conditions. Now is the time for setting up a great, healthy lifestyle.
Could you stand to lose a few pounds? Maybe your exercise routine could use a jump-start. There are a lot of ways to take charge of our health. For example, some might be able to lower their blood pressure just by shifting to the right diet.
Let's do what we can, now, to boost our immune health. This includes eating healthy foods, getting plenty of exercise, sleeping enough and keeping stress levels managed. Also, we can incorporate as many immune-boosting foods, herbs and spices as possible.
We’ve all been cooped up for a while now. Let’s face it, this has been stressful, and many of us are at our breaking points. If restrictions have lifted in your area, it’s time to come out of that cave for a while, get some fresh air and recharge your mental health — responsibly. Recharge and enjoy yourself. We've earned it!
We may see a bit of panic and hoarding if we need to fall back into social distancing again for a while, so why not be prepared ahead of time? Buy a little extra every time you go shopping and set it aside for the fall. Essentials you want to stock up on include: canned and dry goods, baby food, pet food, medications, toiletries and cleaning supplies. By getting a little at a time, you’re leaving enough for everyone else — another socially responsible choice.
COVID-19 could be back around sooner than any of us would like, but this time, we can be a little better prepared. We’ve done this before, now, and we can do it again. Together, we can stand strong and beat this thing — even if it takes surviving another wave or two while the scientists work on a cure. But it definitely helps with peace of mind if we're prepared ahead of time.
