I was very pleased with the fact that Dr. Woolfson told me everything that was going to happen during surgery, so that I wasn't surprised and answered any questions I had. I was very pleased with uncle David and how he made sure we understood everything that we needed to do after surgery and answered any questions we had.
I found all of the staff, including Dr. Woolfson, to be very helpful and educational. The only exception to this is 'Uncle David.' I know he has been around a while and he was supposed to be making us laugh, but the time period we had to wait with David before the procedure was the least helpful part of the experience. I found David's humor unfunny during a particularly stressful time, and when people would ask straight forward questions about the medications or about the procedure, he would make a joke out of it. In such a pivotal time before a major surgery, I would recommend putting someone in this role who is more comforting and educational and less of a 'part time comedian.' There was one patient in our group who was especially nervous, she had been crying, and he was telling her how silly she was for feeling that way instead of trying to calm her down. That was hard to witness. Regarding the procedure itself, I was not expecting the lack of control I would feel over my eyes. I felt under-prepared for that. I could not see, and then I felt like I could not focus once my vision came back. That was alarming and anxiety-inducing. I recommend educating patients on this in advance.
The staff were all friendly and helpful. They were willing and knowledgeable to answer any questions I had. Overall, the procedure was quick and definitely worth the little discomfort experienced.
Dr Woolfson and his colleagues provided exceptional care during my consultation visit and during the surgery appointment. I was kept well informed of everything, and all steps of the procedure went smoothly. Everything occurred in a very timely manner, and I did not have any unreasonable waiting time for anything. Everyone was very pleasant and courteous. COVID precautions were also very well handled. However, some sensitivity training may be considered for certain employees. In my group with 4 other patients during the morning of our procedures, the other four patients were caucasian, and I am non-caucasian. The employee who gave us post-op instructions asked me if I 'was born in this country'. I had not engaged in any conversation with that employee prior to that question about my personal upbringing , and no one else was asked this question, so I felt it to be inappropriate. I do not believe this employee to have any bad intentions or prejudices, but some racial awareness could be improved on from this experience. Overall I had a great experience at Woolfson Eye Institute and will recommend this facility to other people.
